The global energy transition is at an inflection point, and more flexible and “on-demand” energy solutions are critical to enabling a cleaner, more reliable grid. As federal agencies look to save energy costs, adopt more sustainable energy sources, and ensure resilience for our nation’s critical infrastructure, Stem’s innovative smart storage solutions can be integral to achieving these ambitious goals.
With more than 950 energy storage systems and over one gigawatt-hour (GWh) operating or contracted, including at critical facilities such as hospitals and water treatment plants, Stem brings extensive experience to empower government clients to enhance their energy resilience. Our broad customer base includes energy service companies (ESCOs) and project developers, state and federal agencies, electric utilities and cooperatives, and large and mid-sized businesses.
Stem’s Cybersecurity Risk Management Program is grounded in NIST Best Practices and Guidelines, and our live security dashboard monitors all Stem cloud and edge devices in real time. Our robust governance system involves Executive Team and Board oversight, and a leading third party provides comprehensive independent and layered security audit and compliance functions.
Stem’s Athena software receives a continuous stream of asset health data – including temperature, voltage, and current – from each energy storage system. All systems are monitored remotely 24/7 with more than 150 data points through Stem’s Network Operations Center (NOC) to ensure optimum safety and performance.
With impacts from blackouts and power outages increasingly clear, demand for backup power solutions is at an all-time high. Stem’s Athena software optimizes any viable combination of onsite resources with energy storage to help federal customers achieve the level of energy resilience they want.
Stem services are backed by performance guarantees, which minimize financial risk for customers. Stem’s best-in-class Athena software helps lower costs and optimize distributed energy resources (DERs) such as solar PV and backup generators, and regularly outperforms customer savings guarantees.
Athena optimizes system performance over the life of the project, managing the asset to ensure it stays within warranty compliance limits. Athena’s ability to adhere to warranty specifications and document performance over time ensure the asset will not depreciate ahead of schedule as a result of how it is operated.
Featured Case Study:
Stem deployed energy storage at two MWRA sites, a water pumping station and an administrative building, to lower energy costs, provide demand response, and contribute to state zero-emissions goals. Stem’s Athena software optimizes utility bills at both sites, while Stem’s demand response service automatically discharges batteries to reduce site loads, allowing MWRA to maintain uptime, monitor its demand, and interface with the utility. Athena also enables the projects to earn wholesale market revenues.

Featured Case Study:
This energy storage system, installed by Stockmans at a water treatment plant in San Bernardino County, California, will provide backup power in line with state resilience and climate goals. It will also provide significant utility bill savings by reducing the facility’s demand charges and shifting energy use to off-peak times.
