In the April 3 issue of the journal Science, a team from University of Toronto and University of Wisconsin-Madison announced their discovery that heart cells regenerate throughout a human lifetime, with a 1 percent annual turnover rate at age 25, falling to a 0.45 percent turnover rate at age 75. Therefore, the human heart must have it's own stem cells.

The US FDA put a hold on NeuralStem's clinical study amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. A Northwestern University clinical trial using adult stem cells 'cures' Edwin McClure, a Virginia Commonwealth University advertising graduate student with multiple sclerosis. The Associated Press has sensationalized an old stem tourism case where Russian stem therapy from 2002-2004 went horribly wrong. An Israeli boy with a fatal brain disease developed tumors after receiving stem cell injections created from multiple fetal stem cells (some were from a female). Doctors say his brain disease wasn't conducive to stem cell therapy in the first place.

Kyoto University's Shinya Yamanaka and University of Tokyo's Naoya Takayama were the first in the world to generate induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) cells (think artificial embryonic stem cells) using skin cells from mice in 2006, then in humans in November 2007.
